VOR TIME!

Ocean Bound: Brevard College's Voice of the Rivers Team Embarks on 19-day Voyage Down Yadkin-Pee Dee Rivers

A group of Brevard College students and professors is gearing up for a kayak adventure of a life time.

On Sunday, May 16, the College’s Voice of the Rivers (VOR) team will embark on a nearly 400-mile kayak expedition that will snake through North and South Carolina and end in the Atlantic Ocean.

This year, two Brevard College faculty members and 11 students will paddle the length of the Yadkin-Pee Dee watershed. The group will begin its journey by scouting the river's source in the mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, N.C. They will then embark on a 19-day paddling trip starting in North Wilkesboro, N.C. and ending near Georgetown, S.C. where Winyah Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean.

  1. I hope you all have a great trip and learn about the rivers ecological, cultural and recent histories along the way. As a place of interest you might find time to check out is an Archaeological site in Montgomery County. This site is where the Pee Dee Indians had a large significant site which has since then been destroyed and reconstructed for the public to understand the Native histories. If you want to learn more about the site or any other important sites you will be passing thru check out this link provided.

  2. I am so excited for all of you! I have been an avid supporter of VOR since its beginning and have loved seeing each group bring important visions to how we should protect and safeguard our waterways. What an amazing program and an amazing chance for each of you to share the vision of protecting our past, present and future impacts on our watersheds. I look forward to following your progress as you explore the Pee Dee Watershed. Have an awesome and safe trip.
